Unit 3: Microsoft Word & BCS Careers

MSBCS-BCSII-3: The student will examine educational requirements, job responsibilities, employment trends, and opportunities in the different career pathways in Business and Computer Science. 
MSBCS-BCSII-4: The student will utilize word processing software.

Agenda for Thursday, April 3, 2014 and Friday, April 4, 2014:
  • When you finish your drawing assignment, turn it in to Edmodo. Remember: I'm expecting you to have A LOT of small pictures (at least 20) so do not turn it in until you have enough.
  • If you get finished, you can either play On Your Own Coast to Coast OR NitroType.
Agenda for Wednesday, April 2, 2014:
  • I am still missing facts from a few of you.

  • TURN IN YOUR RESEARCH TO THE PADLET NOW!! If you do not turn it in today, it will be considered late and you will have 10 points per day taken away from your grade on this assignment.
  • Continue with your career drawing assignment in Word if you have turned in your facts. Remember: I am looking for A LOT of small pictures (SHAPES ONLY - no ClipArt OR pictures from the internet) on 1 page with a title that tells me which career you researched. See post from yesterday for more specific information.

    Using SHAPES ONLY, create SMALL pictures that represent all of the information you have learned about your career. Be as CREATIVE as possible and fill as much of the space on the page as possible. Remember: There are formatting options that you can change for each shape. You can use text boxes to label pictures ONLY. You may use WordArt for the Title ONLY. Here are some examples that some former students did on an academic subject:

  • If you have not tested out of the typing program, please come and see me.
  • Continue with the Research you started yesterday (directions in yesterday's agenda). To turn that in: save the file as YOURNAME and then drag and drop the file from the folder on your computer to the padlet wall for your class. The file will become a post within the padlet wall.

Agenda for March 27, 2014:
  • If you have not tested out, you need to try to do that ASAP today. Remember: The goal for 7th graders is to have at least 25 NET wpm.
  • Then, we are going to start a new project on Careers in Business & Computer Science. 
  • To begin, please go to GA College 411 and pick a career in the Business and Computer Science field. So that no one picks the same career, please put your choice on the padlet for your class as soon as you make a decision. The password is on the board:

  • As soon as you choose your career, please find at least 20 facts about your career using either GA College 411 or bigfuture.org. Type these facts in a Microsoft Word document. Make the following formatting changes to your document:
  1. Margins - Narrow
  2. Style - Word 2003
  3. Font - Arial, 12 pt. font
  4. Each fact should be listed in a numbered list
  5. Each fact that gives a description of your career should be highlighted in BLUE.
  6. Each fact that talks about money or benefits of your career should be highlighted in GREEN.
  7. Each fact that talks about education should be highlighted in YELLOW.
  8. Each fact that describes a qualification or a needed skill should be highlighted in PINK.
  9. Put a title in the HEADER that is Center Aligned and 16 pt. font that states the career you are researching.
  10. Put your name in the FOOTER that is Center Aligned and 14 pt. font.
  11. Italicize your name in the Footer.
  12. Underline your title in the Header.

Unit 2: Keyboarding

MSBCS-BCSII-1: Students will reinforce keyboarding techniques. 

Essential Questions: Why is it important for you to learn how to type? How is this going to help you in the real world?

Agenda for Wednesday, March 26, 2014:
  • There are 6 people in 7A and 7 people in 7B who have not tested out in the typing program. Please continue with your lessons so you can improve your skills before taking the test again. Remember, you have to have a NET speed of 25 wpm in order to exit the typing program.
  • Those of you who have tested out will have one more day to race in Nitrotype. 
Agenda for Tuesday, March 25, 2014:
  • If you haven't tested out in the typing program yet, please continue working to improve your skills.
  • If you have tested out, you may race your peers in Nitrotype.
  • Remember: You have to have a NET speed of 25 wpm in order to exit the typing program.
Agenda for Friday, March 21, 2014:
  • Today, you will continue with the beginner courses in the typing program.
  • IF you think you could get a 100 (25 NET wpm) without completing the remaining courses, you may TEST OUT TODAY! You must make a 100 in order to test out.
  • After testing out, you may compete against your peers by creating an account in NitroType. See Mrs. Jones to set up a race!
  • Those people who do not test out today will continue with the typing program on Tuesday of next week and the other students will not.
  • I will NOT be here on Monday because I have jury duty. Mr. Jackson and Mrs. Mattison will be in here working with the students who haven't had me for Careers in order for them to complete their assessments in GACollege411. The students who have had me already will go to Mrs. Dorsey's lab to participate in a leadership activity.

  1. Complete ALL beginner courses
  2. Complete the first two intermediate courses (You may complete more if you want)
  3. Take another typing test - Here is how the test will be scored - 
    (Gross Speed - Errors = Net Speed):
  • 100 = 25 NET wpm
  • 95 = 23-24 NET wpm
  • 90 = 21-22 NET wpm
  • 85 = 18-20 NET wpm
  • 80 = 15-17 NET wpm
  • 75 = 14 NET wpm
  • 70 = 13 NET wpm
  • 65 = 12 NET wpm
  • 60 = <12 NET wpm

  • Please log in to your Edmodo account and take the "So You Think You Know Basic Technology?!?" Quiz. This will count as a formative.
  • Typing Test - The graphic on the projector shows you where to click to take this typing test. This is just a pre-test and will not count this time.
  • You DO NOT have to use the keyboard covers for the typing test but you DO NEED to use them for the beginner courses in the typing program.
  • Work on finishing all beginner courses of the typing program. 
  • You should be finished with this by Friday at the latest. 
  • You can take another typing test after every lesson is finished to see what kind of progress you have made.
  • You will take a typing test that WILL count after you have completed all beginner courses.
